New figures show a surge in the number of New Zealanders travelling around the country and the amount they are spending.
A Ministry of Economic Development survey of 15,000 New Zealand residents has found that, compared with the previous year, spending on domestic travel in 2011 rose 14% to $9.8 billion.
The number of trips taken rose by 13% to 50 million - nearly a third of which were by business travellers.
In contrast, Statistics New Zealand figures for the same period show a 0.7% fall in total guest nights, with fewer travellers staying in hotels.
