Party pill ingredient banned

An ingredient in party pills and performance supplements has been banned and retailers have one month to remove products containing it from their shelves.

DMAA - or 1,3-dimethylamylamine - has had a Temporary Class Drug Notice put on it which means anyone selling it has to prove it is safe.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne says he has banned the stimulant from products because of health concerns, including severe pain and the risk of stroke.

He says it is the first substance beside synthetic cannabanoids to be banned using the new measure of temporary drug notices since a law change last year.
