New Zealand's hopes of progressing to the quarterfinals of the men's Olympic football tournament are still alive after a 1-all draw with Egypt but they now need to beat Brazil in their final match to have any chance of achieving the feat.
In an enthralling match at Old Trafford, New Zealand's Chris Wood scored the first goal midway through the first half.
However, Mohamed Salah equalised for Egypt five minutes before halftime.
Good chances went begging from both sides in a frantic and open final 20 minutes with both sides chasing three points in front of a crowd of 50 thousand.
New Zealand coach Neil Emblen said the performance didn't quite live up to that against Belarus but praised his side's commitment to the cause.
Brazil beat a spirited Belarus 3-1 in the late kickoff to book their place in the last eight and Emblen is still hopeful New Zealand could join them.
He says the last match is such a prestigious game for his players to be a part of and they have to go into that believing they have a chance.
The match against Brazil is on Thursday morning.
Only the top two teams from each group go through to the quarter-finals.
In the day's other Group C match, Brazil beat Belarus 3-1.
Mexico beat Gabon 2-0 in Group B.
Korea beat Switzerland 2-1 in Group B.
Senegal beat Uruguay 2-0 in Group A.
Great Britain beat UA Emirates 3-1 in Group A.
Japan beat Morocco 1-0 in Group D.
