However it was a disappointing night for Adams who struggled with her technique and could only manage a winning distance of 19.88 metres, well below her best.

Adams had hoped to break her Games record of 20.47 metres set in Delhi four years ago.

The Olympic champion says it was frustrating, and all the hype leading up to the event could have left her a bit flat, but she's nonetheless happy.

Her coach Jean-Pierre Egger, who watched his charge's latest triumph on his 70th birthday, says she was trying too hard.

It is her 54th consecutive competition win and third straight Commonwealth Games title.

Cleopatra Borel of Trinidad and Tobago won her second straight silver medal, while Julie Labonte of Canada was third.
