A group representing the deaf community hopes changes will be made at Parliament following the election of New Zealand's first deaf MP.

Mojo Mathers will join the Green Party caucus after the party picked up another list seat in the final election results.

National Foundation for the Deaf chief executive Louise Carroll hopes parliamentary debates and proceedings will now be made more accessible for people who are deaf and hearing impaired.

She says that should include the introduction of captioning on the television broadcasts of Parliament.

A spokesperson for the Parliamentary Service says they are working with the Green Party to provide the support and equipment Ms Mathers will need to carry out her parliamentary role.
