Historic building used as polling venue closed

Polling that would have taken place in a historic Banks Peninsula theatre has had to be moved because the building was closed on Friday until earthquake strengthening is carried out.

Part of the Gaiety Hall in Akaroa stayed open after the earthquake on 22 February, following an engineer's assessment.

Christchurch City Council says a more detailed inspection has now indicated the hall should be strengthened.

Spokesperson Michael Aitken said there may have been a risk to people who have used the building since February, but the first assessment indicated part of the hall was safe, and the council must balance closing facilities with public safety.

The Akaroa Sports Complex will be used as a polling place instead.
