Several hundred thousand voters still not signed up

A total of 225,000 eligible voters are still to join the electoral roll.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre said that as of Thursday night, 93.1% of eligible voters had enrolled, a slightly lower level than at the same time before the 2008 general election.

The centre's national manager, Murray Wicks, said 3,050,000 eligible voters had registered.

Of those who had not registered, 145,000 (67%) were eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 29, most of them living in cities with universities.

Unenrolled voters had until midnight on Friday to return registration forms.

Mr Wicks said that was still able to be done on Friday by fax or email, and also by post as long as the envelope carried a Friday date-stamp.

He said eligible voters could be fined $100 for failing to enrol.
