The New Zealand rugby sevens team has swept aside its competition in pool play the Commomnwealth Games in Delhi.

The defending champions beat Canada 43-7, Guyana 52-0 and Scotland 43-0.

They will meet Wales in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, with either England or Samoa their likely semifinal opponent.

Coach Gordon Tietjens says he is more confident about his side following their first day performance and was particularly happy with their defence, conceding just one try when they were down to five players.

IRB champions Samoa were upset 12-10 by Kenya in the last match of the opening day.
