Australian track cyclist Shane Perkins has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games men's team sprint as penance for making a rude gesture at officials.

The pre-race favourite was disqualified in his keirin heat for dangerous riding.

After claiming seventh in a later ride-off, he aimed a two-fingered salute at cycling officials, Reuters reports.

On Friday, Perks admitted what he did was not the right thing to do.

He says he pulled out of the team sprint because he thinks it is respectful to his team, and wants to set an example for other team members.
