Silver medal won by paralympian

Southland paralympian Jess Hamill has won a silver medal in the shot put at the Commonwealth Games.

Louise Ellery of Australia won the event and Gemma Prescott of England was third.

Hamill, 20, threw 7.17 metres. Once her level of disability was taken into account, she earned 979 points. Ellery totalled 1110 points.

Hamill heads home on Friday and will begin building up to the world championships in New Zealand in January.
