Nutricia says product recall is voluntary

The maker of Karicare products recalled in New Zealand due to Fonterra's contamination scare says that recall is voluntary and it has no reason to believe its products are unsafe.

The managing director of Nutricia, Corine Tap, told a news conference in Auckland on Monday that the 60,000 affected cans of formula passed Nutricia's own safety testing.

"Based on the information we have had from Fonterra on their contaminated ingredient, we have decided to take a precautionary measure to recall these products.

"There is no evidence that these products are affected. They may be affected by the contaminated ingredient of Fonterra."

Ms Tap says about 3000 people have phoned Nutricia's customer line and the company has boosted the number of staff answering calls.

She would not say whether Nutricia is considering legal action against Fonterra.
