Another protest mooted

The organiser of a protest against Christchurch City Council wants people to join a protest march, to pressure the Government to allow midterm elections.

Peter Lynch drew an estimated 3000 people to a rally on 1 February outside the council offices after chief executive Tony Marryatt received a $68,000 pay rise. He now says he hopes to convince the Government that early elections are needed.

He and property commentator Hugh Pavletich have launched a website calling for change. Mr Lynch hopes it will attract signatures from about 6000 people.

He says it is also likely there will be a Sunday afternoon protest march to show the Government how much support the elections have.

Mr Lynch says Mr Marryatt's decision to play a half day of golf on Thursday rather than attend a council meeting, showed problems still exist.
