Luxury apartments to be urgently demolished

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says inspections have revealed that a luxury apartment complex overlooking Hagley Park will have to be urgently demolished.

The authority says engineering checks have shown that two of the six buildings in the Terrace on the Park apartment complex have critical structural damage in quakes on 23 December last year and must come down immediately.

The area will be fenced off on Friday.

The complex has been unoccupied for some time, but because of the risk of the buildings collapsing in another aftershock, at least four neighbours will have to temporarily leave their homes.
