Representatives of the Anglican Church have met to discuss their options after the insurance company Ansvar announced it will no longer provide earthquake cover.
Ansvar New Zealand has been insuring about three quarters of the country's churches.
However, it will cancel its policies at the end of the year because of the high cost of reinsurance following the Canterbury earthquakes.
The Anglican Church says its contract with Ansvar was due to run out in March and it is in negotiations with other insurers.
A spokesperson Lloyd Ashton says the premiums being offered are much higher than they were before.
He says a decision on an insurer could be made in a week's time.
