A theatre in the Banks Peninsula town of Akaroa has been closed while earthquake strengthening is carried out.
Part of the Gaiety Hall stayed open after February's earthquake, following an engineer's assessment.
But Christchurch City Council says a more detailed inspection has now indicated the hall should be strengthened.
Spokesperson Michael Aitken says there may have been a risk to people who have used the building since February.
But the first assessment indicated part of the hall was safe and he says the council must balance closing facilities with public safety.
