The Earthquake Commission has paid out $84 million in contents claims in the past month as it tries to settle as many claims as possible by Christmas.

The commission has settled 100,000 claims since September's 7.1 magnitude earthquake, at a cost of more than $2.5 billion.

It had encouraged people to put in their claims by Labour Weekend, saying if people met that deadline it would guarantee they would be paid out by Christmas.

The commission says it is on target to settle the 20,000 claims lodged by the deadline.
