About 150 people gathered in Christchurch to call for an end to the destruction of the Christchurch's heritage buildings, in the wake of the earthquakes there.
A petition for heritage protection was signed and handed to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority by some of the demostrators.
Of particular concern is the fate of Christchurch Cathedral following a recent announcement that it will be partially demolished.
One of those on the rally, central city property developer, Lisle Hood, says the Cathedral is key to Christchurch's identity and it should be fully restored.
"It's the very pivot of the city, it's the centre of the Square, and has been seen by millions of people. I don't believe that building should be deconstructed in any way, other than in a minor way."
The protesters say there hasn't been enough public consultation over heritage demolition and they describe the recovery authority's approach as scandalous.
