Investigating Dunedin quake risk not a priority - geologist

A senior geologist looking into the ongoing threat posed by Canterbury's earthquakes says investigating the chances of a similar earthquake in Dunedin is not the top priority at the moment.

Cornell University in the United States is calling for a review of the threat posed to cities such as Dunedin, which has similar geography to Christchurch.

A geologist with GNS Science Kelvin Berryman says while such an investigation could be useful, work is currently focused on mapping the frequency of aftershocks in Canterbury.

Dr Berryman says the location of faultlines is just one of the things used in predicting where quakes might occur.

He says locating them would be easier if New Zealand scientists had access to a seismic profiling machine.
