A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck just east of Christchurch at 5.30pm on Tuesday.
The quake's epicentre was 10km west of Christchurch at a depth of 8km.
At 4.30pm, a 4.2-magnitude quake struck 10km southwest of the city at a depth of 7km.
