Earthquake damage to the water supply in Christchurch means gardeners are likely to have water restrictions imposed on them this summer.
Christchurch City Council is still determining what level of restriction will be needed, but says it's likely to include no watering of gardens at least one day per week.
Water and waste manager Mark Christison says a strict maximum water use level will be set, and a total watering ban will be imposed if it's exceeded.
The restrictions will come into force in October.
Mr Christison says they're needed even though water supply upgrades were approved on Thursday.
The council has agreed to three new wells and a pumping station in New Brighton, and a new pumping station and repairs at the Huntsbury reservoir.
