Christchurch's badly damaged sewerage system is expected to be fully functioning by the end of August.
Much of city's eastern suburbs were left without working toilets following the devastating 22 February quake, with 30,000 homes forced to use chemical toilets or portaloos on the street.
The Christchurch City Council's manager of water and waste says it is on schedule to complete repairs to all street sewers by the end of the month.
However, Mark Christison says people who have damage to the lateral pipes connecting their home to the sewer line will have to continue using portaloos.
The council is working with the Earthquake Commission and home owners on repairing the lateral pipes and about 600 jobs are still outstanding.
Mr Christison says the council is also close to stopping wastewater overflows into the waterways.
