Copper dome removed from Catholic basilica

The internal pressed copper dome of Christchurch's Catholic basilica has been removed by crane.

The eight-tonne section of dome, which is not part of the main structure, was lifted out of the building on Thursday and placed on a prepared piece of ground for inspection.

It has been supported by timber joists and a thin, damaged concrete slab since the 22 February earthquake.
