Scientists from GNS Science have found another previously unknown faultline under Christchurch.
They say the faultline is quite short, at about 8 km, and runs between the suburbs of Lincoln and Halswell.
A spokesperson for GNS Science, Kelvin Berryman, told Checkpoint the newly identified fault runs between the two faultlines that caused the September and February quakes and it is likely there are others that are yet to be discovered.
He also says GNS Science data shows the likelihood of a large earthquake hitting Christchurch is decreasing.
He says for each month that passes without a magnitude 6 earthquake, the chance of there being another big quake becomes less and less likely.
