Families begin moving into Kaiapoi's first temporary village this weekend.

Temporary villages are being set up on Waimakarari District Council land in the town to house people forced from their homes by earthquake damage.

Over the past six weeks, part of the Kaiapoi domain has been transformed into a temporary residential community, with 22 houses.

Two families will move in this weekend and the Department of Building and Housing expects other people to move in next week.

Work is also underway to turn Linwood Park into a village and, if needed, Rawhiti Domain in New Brighton.

Another 17 possible sites have been identified.

The Linwood village, with 41 houses, is expected to be ready within a month.
