Christchurch bakery staff lose jobs

Twenty-seven workers at an earthquake quake-damaged Christchurch bakery have lost their jobs.

The Quality Bakers plant in the suburb of Linwood has been closed since the quake on 22 February and could take two years to rebuild.

Australian-based owner Goodman Fielder says it has been paying workers a salary since the quake.

However, spokesperson Ian Greenshields says the company has decided it can no longer pay people when there is not any work.

Mr Greenshields says the company is trying to re-deploy people to other vacancies in the South Island, but will pay out a full redundancy package to employees it cannot find work for.
