The number of buildings to be demolished in Christchurch's inner-city red zone has been increased to 589.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has identified 167 buildings which need to either fully or partially demolished.

This is in addition to 439 buildings that Civil Defence signed off during the state of emergency which finished at the end of April.

The authority says it has sent building owners demolition notices and is working closely with them to work out the best way to take the buildings down.
