Parts of Christchurch flooded due to aftershocks

Parts of Christchurch have flooded following a series of earthquakes in the region on Monday.

In the south-east, roads were covered in water and liquified silt following the earthquakes that included a magnitude 6 tremor.

Grassed areas around the estuary of the Avon and Heathcote rivers have also liquified, and the Avon is high, dirty and thick with silt.

Temporary stopbanks along the Avon and Heathcote rivers were damaged.

Christchurch City Council said it was unlikely work to restore these would be completed before the early morning high tide on Tuesday so further localised flooding is expected.

There was liquefaction in the eastern suburbs, Shirley and St Albans.
