Historic Godley House to be pulled down

The historic 19th century Godley House on Banks Peninsula, which was damaged in the recent Canterbury earthquakes, is to be demolished.

Christchurch City Council says the 1880 building at Diamond Harbour has all but collapsed.

Godley House is listed as a Category 2 historic place and it is hoped that careful demolition of the building will salvage some of the heritage material.

Mayor Bob Parker says more recently, the building was used as a restaurant and is a landmark.
