Govt to announce more help for business

Prime Minister John Key says the Government will make further announcements in the coming days about how it will help businesses in Christchurch.

An initial assistance package lasting six weeks was announced last month.

The Earthquake Support Subsidy is for affected employers to help pay their workers.

It provides $500 per week for each employee and $300 for part time workers.

Self-employed and sole-trading workers, as well as contractors, also qualify for assistance.

Mr Key says the current scheme and its effectiveness has been examined.

He says work has been done to try to get a balanced package that the Government can afford, which also gives support to people who are clearly in need.
