A magnitude 4.3 aftershock was felt in Christchurch early on Saturday.
The quake, at 2.11am, was centred 10km north of the city, at a depth of 11km.
Geonet says it would have been widely felt in Christchurch.
There was a spate of aftershocks on Friday, the strongest being magnitude 4.1 just after midnight.
