The historic trams in Christchurch will be officially welcomed back to the central city on Wednesday after a three-year absence because of the region's earthquakes.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel was due to cut the ribbon at 10am at the tramway re-opening ceremony in Cathedral Junction.
Before the quakes, the trams carried an estimated 280,000 passengers a year.
The Christchurch City Council is paying for a $1.5 million repair and upgrade of the tramway, which will eventually allow the service return to its former 2.6km loop.
The trams will initially run from New Regent Street through Cathedral Junction to Cathedral Square and along Worcester Boulevard.
