Mayor unsure of need for residents' advisors

The Christchurch mayor has questioned the need for the Government's Residential Advisory Service.

The service began offering advice to residents in May about their claims for earthquake damage with the Earthquake Commission and private insurers.

Representatives of the service made a presentation to a full council meeting on Thursday asking for funding.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said many of the problems residents have been experiencing relate to a lack of information from EQC.

She asked why a government service was needed to address that, when the Government could itself simply direct EQC to fix things.

"We're being asked to fund an advisory service when going to source would solve most of the problems before they became problems," she said.

The request for funding was referred to the council's Earthquake Recovery Committee.
