Community centre planned for Aranui

Christchurch City Council has announced it will build a new facility for youth and community groups in the quake-damaged suburb of Aranui.

It's still to be decided where the 976 square metre community centre will be built, but the preferred site is that of the Wainoni Aranui Community Centre, which has been closed since the February 2011 quake.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust is giving $1 million towards the new facility - half of which is from an anonymous donor - and the Lions Club International will contribute $450,000.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says residents have missed having a place where they can meet for cultural, recreational and educational activities.
