Christchurch sales growth outpaces nation

The pace of growth in retail and hospitality spending in earthquake-damaged Christchurch continues to outpace that at the national level.

Official figures show seasonally adjusted retail and hospitality sales increased 2.4 in the three months to June, the fifth successive quarter of strong growth. That compares with a rise of 0.9% nationally.

Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) said growth fell behind following a series of major quakes which started on 4 September 2010, but has since rebounded.

Retail and hospitality sales in Christchurch have risen 16% compared with a gain of 12% nationally since the June quarter in 2010.

SNZ said sales had been driven by hardware, building and garden supplies, and cars.
