The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has closed areas in and around the site of the QEII Stadium in Christchurch after small amounts of asbestos piping were found buried there.
The 1974 Commonwealth Games venue was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and has now been completely demolished.
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says the asbestos piping was found in small broken pieces which are thought to be offcuts of the original pipes when the complex was built.
The authority has closed parts of the site, including a public walking track, to allow for environmental testing and as a safety precaution.
