Cricket pitch decision delayed again

Christchurch city councillors say they have again delayed a decision on whether an international cricket pitch should be built at Hagley Park - this time because of confusion over the council's legal obligations.

A $20-million cricket venue was included in the city's quake-recovery blueprint, launched in July, but protest group Save Hagley Parkwants to preserve Hagley Park as it is.

Earlier this month, a council committee delayed a vote on the matter after conflicting advice on whether or not the council has to build the cricket ground because it is in the blueprint.

Councillors were due to vote on the proposal at a meeting tomorrow but it has been delayed until next 6 December.

Councillor Yani Johannson says he wants written clarification, after the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister, Gerry Brownlee, said this month it was the council's ultimate decision.
