Concern about coverage of quake building demolition

Concerns have been expressed at a briefing by Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority to Christchurch City Council about the image the city is likely to portray when media attention focuses on the demolition of a high rise building using explosives.

The demolition of the 14-storey Radio Network House early next month will be the first in the city using explosives.

In a briefing on Thursday, chief executive Roger Sutton said it was important the message got out that rebuilding was also underway.

He said he did not want to turn it into a media event, but the fact the demolition was taking place early on a Sunday morning guaranteed it would receive media coverage around the world.
