A major milestone in the Canterbury earthquakes inquiry has been reached with the presentation to the Governor General of the first part the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission report.

Commission executive director Justine Gilliland says the report is the culmination of many months of work, with contributions from members of the public and experts.

Ms Gilliland says the first part of the report is focused on the Christchurch rebuild and building performance.

The Governor-General was being presented with the report at 10am on Friday, in Auckland, by the hearing's two commissioners.

The Government will decide when it will be made public.

The Royal Commission is required to deliver the remainder of the report by 12 November.
