A show home village will open in Christchurch on Saturday to promote the use of prefabricated homes in the earthquake rebuild.
The village at Canterbury Agricultural Park has been set up by Prefab NZ, a non-profit society representing manufacturers and builders of prefabricated homes.
The society's chief executive, Pamela Bell, says the Home Innovation Village will be in place for two years, with six more houses to be added in coming months to the four completed ones on site this weekend.
Ms Bell says the prefabricated buildings can be assembled very quickly but are of high quality and made from permanent materials, and may offer a solution to the many people in Christchurch who have had to leave quake-damaged properties.
