Red zone residents claim Government bullying

Some people living in the Christchurch red zone say the Government is trying to bully them into leaving their land.

More than 6000 sections have been deemed uninhabitable due to earthquake damage, but some people say they can't or won't leave.

Resident Brent Cairns says trying to replace his family's large red-zoned section would leave them with so much debt that they are determined to stay on even if services are cut off.

He says the Government refuses to discuss options or to give full details behind their decisions, leaving people feeling bullied.

Ernest Tsao is part of a group representing people who are in the red zone, but who don't have insurance so aren't covered by the buyout offer.

Mr Tsao says people feel threatened by talk of compulsory acquisition of their land.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says before the red zone offer the value of the land had largely gone, and the offers just give the owners some options.
