12:22 pm on 14 December 2011

Chorus has signed a deal with Huawei of China to extend the reach of broadband into rural regions.

The new arrangement allows Chorus to use Huawei's network equipment to increase the data capacity of existing rural fibre optic cables to connect remote schools, roadside cabinets and cellular sites.

In April, Telecom and Vodafone won the Government's $285 million contract to provide high speed broadband to 252,000 rural users.
