Amcor Australasia says its new $40 million manufacturing plant at Wiri in South Auckland will allow it to double production.
The Australian-owned company already processes 300 million beverage cans per year at the plant, representing around 70% of New Zealand's beverage can production. The plant employs 77 people.
Managing director Nigel Garrard says the extra capacity will allow the business to expand into new types of packaging and processes not currently available in the New Zealand market, such as printing, embossing and more size options.
Mr Garrard says capacity will double when the new processing line is fully operational and more people may be employed as a result.
He says investment in innovation, new technology and greater efficiency is a key ingredient for business success and Amcor is intent on continuing to invest.
