Stocks fall on fears of European crisis

9:21 am on 7 September 2011

US and European stock markets have fallen on fears that the European debt crisis is worsening.

Wall Street stocks fell more than 2% in early tradin on Tuesday but recovered to close with modest losses.

Markets in France and Germany ended the day lower, while London's FTSE 100 bucked the trend, rising just over 1%.

Bank shares had suffered the biggest declines due to continuing fears about banks' exposure to the debt crisis.

The Swiss franc lost nearly 10% against the euro after Switzerland's central bank set a limit of 1.20 francs to the euro in an attempt to keep its currency strength from damaging the economy.

Global investors have poured money into the Swiss franc seeking a relatively safe asset.
