Solid Energy says it has selected Stevenson Mining to take over from HWE Mining when the current contract expires at its Rotowaro opencast mine in Waikato later this year.
The contract is to remove rock and other material above the coal seams, extract and process coal, and progressively rehabilitate the mine site over five years.
Stevenson Mining is one of the five subsidiaries of New Zealand company Stevenson Group.
The Rotowaro mine employs about 160 people and produces approximately 1.3 million tonnes of coal each year.
