Vector says there is a danger of under-investment in the electricity distribution system under the competition regulator's stance on input methodologies.

The Auckland-based network operator is appealing against the Commerce Commission's decisions, saying its priority is to keep the lights on and the gas flowing.

Chief executive Simon Mackenzie says the merits appeal will allow a fresh set of experts and the courts to look at the commission's decisions to see if it meets the requirements of the 2008 Commerce Act amendments.

Separately, Auckland International Airport has appealed against the commission's final determination on input methodologies for airport information disclosure rules.
