Fletcher Building is looking into whether fire doors at the international convention centre in Auckland are contaminated with asbestos.

At least two other buildings are reported to be looking into the composition of their doors.

The problem is with an imported material used by country's largest fire door manufacturer, Pacific Door Systems.

Fletcher told the stock market that surface testing had so far found no asbestos residue.

"The current advice is that potentially impacted doors are safe in their current, installed state," it said.

Pacific Doors, part of the big Assa Abloy group, earlier put out an alert, saying a small number of fire-rated doors might be contaminated; it listed 13 types.

"More information is being sought from the relevant third party manufacturer," it said.

It had temporarily closed Pacific Doors sites in Wellington and Timaru to remove some material, after WorkSafe inspections.

It had switched to another supplier of a core material used in one category of its Pyropanel doors, the company said.

WorkSafe said it was notified in June.

Some doors at an MFAT building in Wellington have reportedly been removed, and fire doors at Christchurch's Te Kaha Stadium were being tested.

One question is how far back the problem goes.

Since it came to light in Australia, a lot of tests had been run on what is called FRB board, Pacific said.

"Initially, it was thought from these testing results and other available information that the contamination issue may primarily have impacted only more recently imported FRB core.

"However, PDS has now become aware that a single fire-rated door manufactured and supplied by PDS around one year ago has, when tested, reported findings of asbestos in the FRB core."

It was still investigating.

"The issue is being investigated, but in the meantime PDS is publishing this notice for transparency and informing relevant parties as part of steps to help ensure safe working and handling practices in connection with fire-rated doors that may be impacted."
