Fisher & Paykel Appliances has developed a new refrigerator compressor, that will save power and increase storage capacity.

The whiteware manufacturer, which has spent a decade on designing the lighter, oil-free product, says Brazilian compressor maker Embraco will make it for field testing in New Zealand and the United States.

While the technology is yet to be fully proven, chief executive Stuart Broadhurst says he's confident it will be a money spinner for the company.

Mr Broadhurst says it will take about two years to test the compressor for reliability.
