The benchmark NZX50 index closed down 10 points, or 0.3%, at 3111 on turnover of $79 million on Thursday.
Fletcher Building was down 6c to $8.06, Telecom was unchanged at $2.05 and Contact Energy rose 3c to $6.03.
Auckland International Airport was down 1cent to $1.91, while Air New Zealand was unchanged at $1.21.
Fisher and Paykel Healthcare and Fisher and Paykel Appliances both dropped 1c - to $3.44 and 59c respectively.
Ryman picked up 1c to $2.15 after announcing a record underlying annual profit of $61 million on Wednesday.
Kiwi Income Property Trust was down 1c to 95c.
On currency markets, the NZ dollar was buying 68.14 US cents, 81.22 Australian, 47.39 pence, 62.42 yen and .5521 euro. The TWI stood at 66.23.
In Australia, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed down 70.6 points, or 1.61%, at 4316.5 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index fell 71.9 points, or 1.63%, to 4342.4 points.
