The Government is seeking exploration bids for the onshore Kahili gas field in Taranaki.
The field was discovered in 2002 and a mining permit was granted in 2004, but production stopped soon afterwards when the well filled with water.
Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee says the field may still hold significant volumes of gas and the tender is being opened to test commercial interest.
The offer closes on 3 May.
