Apple unveils iPad tablet

In one of the worst kept secrets of the year so far, Apple has finally revealed its iPad tablet amid intense media attention.

It's a tablet style touch screen computer, and it's designed to surf the web, and can run films, books and games.

The tablet will cost between $US499 and $US829.

The device, which looks like a large iPhone, can be used to watch films, play games and browse the web.

Apple's profits rose 50% in the latest quarter and it's betting on the iPad to drive the next wave of growth.

Chief executive Steve Jobs says it's aiming to bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops.

Analysts say convincing people to buy the tablet may be difficult, and previous attempts by other technology companies, including Microsoft and Toshiba, have failed. Other products in the market include Amazon's Kindle e-reader.
